Yes its nice they expanded the entry level range, there is quite a big price jump up to the Intuos, and I have been holding out for one, but for what I want to do (ie edit photos) and with the improvements in the pressure sensitivity ( going from 512 to 1024) thats a real possibility now and a lot more affordable.

I have one that has an active area of about 6 x 8 inches. I personally would not like one any bigger as you have to move your hand to much.

I've just gotten myself an Intuos 4, Medium size.
It is great in Lightroom, but probably not much of an advantage over a mouse. It's full graphics programs like Photoshop where it really excels.
Be prepeared for a bit of a learning curve as you do have to think differently from using a mouse, plus finding the right setup configuration for you will take a bit of time. I wouldn't want anything bigger as you do have to move your hand a lot.
I got mine a couple of weeks ago while in Japan - they are about 2/3rds the price they are here (got an Intuos for a Bamboo price). If you are/know of someone going overseas consider that option for puchase, or weka2000's 2nd-hand one could be a good deal.

I have never warmed to it. I like the idea but just seems fiddly for me.
8x6 (A5) is about the right size.

Windows 7 seems big on them ..... and you can configure the hell out of it.

Used to have an Intuos 3 A4 model. It was massive and a bit unwieldy. Given the opportunity again, I'd have gone for the smaller model if it was just for photo editing. I found it to look at the screen and not the tablet but it's something you would get used to. I'd get one again but not the A4 one.
