Hmmm, the problem might be the other way around, they work at night but no idea if it could be swapped to daylight. Hadn't thought about that.

I think it's going to end up with us having to get something a little more expensive . I was in DSE this afternoon and they have an alarm system that detects motion up to 10 metres - but they couldn't tell me if this was in daylight as well .

If it's for an alarm then it would have to work in both wouldn't it? Not much point having an alarm that only works a few hours a day.

I think the problem is that most alarms are designed to be mounted indoors - not in direct sunlight - so even if they do work during the day the requirement may be that it is in the shade .
Actually I have one of those DSE alarms that I bought a while ago - I'll have to dig it out wherever it is and have a look !

If you can get a microwave motion sensor for a reasonable price, it would be better than IR, they can be tuned for distance/sensitivity & unaffected by light.

They're used as the sensors for automatic door openers and also for alarms where sunlight may strike them.

I managed to get one from Guardall years ago to fire a flash for a similar application, but could try a local alarm / automatic-door installer.

I dug out this old alarm I bought a few years ago - it works at quite a good distance even in direct sunlight .

on the subject of shooting at the right moment (motion sensor trigger aside), here's a photo I found that could be fun to create in a similar fashion. anyhow, good link to an outstanding photographer. each of his photographs hold much for the viewer.
