Default 50mm F1.8 does Tattoo Convention

I made it along today - didn't get a chance to take any tattoo shots. Turns out if you are a vanilla looking white chick with no obvious ink, you are invisible at these things *sigh*

Just about every guy ignored me, one woman at a tattoo booth was quite chatty but it was a bit disappointing really - all these tattoo artists in one place and all they seemed to be doing was tattooing each other. I could have been in the market to get mine freshened up a bit but oh well.

But I got there in time for the Skindependence guys who were doing a hook and suspension demo using a cherrypicker on the grass next to the grandstand.

I got some pix of them in the air, but it wasnt high enough and there was a lot of background crap. So when they came down I asked for some closeups, put the 50mm F1.8 on as an experiment and snapped away.

And I got some GREAT pix - however big shiny hooks thru skin probably should go in the Objectionable section, and as soon as Jack lets me know the right password I will post some in there.

They are up on my Flickr site but I had to set as 'restricted' (ie not safe for kids) and unless you have a login you might not see them there either.

And the Skindependence guys were quite nice, one was very patient, and gave me his email address and told me about a show they are doing next month. Might go along, I have a friend who's a regular who can tell me what the lighting is usually like, and if its worth the ticket price.

Just looked @ your flickr - holy crap - that gives me the willies. I'd have to be getting pretty good bang for bucks to do that.

Loving the responses - I was aiming for a very visceral response, I edited (as carefully as I could) to bring up the detail, make the blood look red and fresh, and the hooks extra shiny and a bit scary.

No its not everyones thing, its certainly not mine, but it was a great thing to have a camera in front of, and at least one of the two guys was very obliging and patiently stood for me for a few minutes while I got my shots, which given the hooks were still in, must have been *quite* painful, and one started shaking badly which I know myself is an obvious sign of the adrenaline rush starting to fade.

Lots of people shoot these from a distance, silhouette etc, but I wanted the gritty, in your face "this is what it looks like " up close effect you don't normally get to see.

If a photographer is your window/journey into another world that you don't usually look in, and if these images evoke such strong responses, then I think its possible these are my best work to date.

Damn shame I can't share them with everyone! LOL
