    Default mark up on sales

I have had an enquiry from someone looking to buy one of my shots printed on a large canvas. for those of you lucky enough to have sold some work, how do you price your wares. what markup do you put on the printing costs and how do you put a value on your photographic efforts?

It is really a personal thing, depends upon what you are looking for from your photography.

However, as a general rule, I would put 100% on printing/mounting costs, freight/packaging would be at cost & for my contribution i.e. pulling the trigger, it would depend upon the shot, how much effort went into it, what it's prospective market would be prepared to pay.

Sorry that I couldn't be more definitive but as mentioned, it is a very personal thing.

Yeah as Mark says it's really up to you.

Personally I usually just sell the photo and let the person print it themselves. For non-commercial use like this I'll usually just charge $50. I figure if I wanted to print someone else's photo then I wouldn't want to pay much more than that, given how much the printing itself costs.

Since you are doing the legwork in terms of printing I guess you can charge more for your time and effort along with the photo itself.

the main thing is you need to be able to say your price with a straight face..

if its too high, you'll feel uncomfortable asking for so much.... and you wont get it (trust me)

forget what othe rpeople are doing,

    1. what would you like for it
    2. who is buying i and what for (private vs corporate will allow variation)
    3. how much would you reasonably expect to pay for a an artwork.

then say that number with a striaght face and you have a sale

Have you looked at prices from places like www.myworld.co.nz? You could also get them shipped directly to the customer to save having to handle it yourself.
