Dug this up in the garden and took a wee photo. Not sure if its rubbish or not. Please feel to rip it up and offer any advice.

Yeah shallower DOF is not possible with my kit lens unfortunately. I have an old manual f1.2 50mm lens back in Scotland, not sure whether to get it sent over or buy something cheap off Trade Me.
