Adobe changing upgrade policy when new version is released

FYI the current policy Adobe has when they release a new version is you can upgrade if you are up to two version older

IE when version 5 was released, you could purchase the upgrade if you had V 4.x and V3.x

Its now been announced than you will only be able to purchase upgrades if you have the version before hand

IE currently V5.x will only be able to upgrade to V6 when its released


So for anyone with older versions hanging out for the next version with all the cool features, you are about to lose that option, so UPGRADE now to retain your options

For customers who prefer to remain on the current licensing model, we will continue to offer our individual point products and Adobe Creative Suite editions as perpetual licenses. With regards to upgrades, we are changing our policy for perpetual license customers. In order to qualify for upgrade pricing when CS6 releases, customers will need to be on the latest version of our software (either CS5 or CS5.5 editions). If our customers are not yet on those versions, we’re offering a 20% discount through December 31, 2011 which will qualify them for upgrade pricing when we release CS6.

Just checking the pricing in USD online, its $699 to buy one off, and $199 to upgrade, so to go from full CS4 -> CS5 -> CS6 it is $398 (full pricing, no discounts). Still cheaper but stink to not be able to do it in one step. I was going to just get every second one since there is not much usefull differences between versions for me, oh well.

Note that the US pricing only applies if you have a US address.
When you buy as a New Zealander the pricing goes up!

Yeah I think from memory I paid just over $400 NZ to upgrade from CS2 -> CS5 (I got the CS2 on trademe for about $100 I think, it was a while ago, cheaper than buying CS5 new for about $1200 or so NZ). The US pricing was just an example to say you would need just over three upgrades before paying full price. Not liking it but not the end of the world either if the time between upgrades is a 12-18 months.

Its hard to image what they could improve (that I actually need or use), but I guess people always say that before seeing whats on offer, then realising I really really neeeed it.

It's a much bigger hit when you have CS4 Design premium I just paid short of $1000 NZD for the CS5 upgrade

Adobe have backed down on this somewhat and allowing CS3 and CS4 users to upgrade before the end of the year.

Yeah, they rang me with a limited time discount offer (I had CS4)....then days later advised no upgrade to CS6 would be possible.
Not wanting to buy another package from scratch it seemed a good idea to upgrade at the time....
