There will be a bit of fat built into the NZ price to cover currency fluctuations as well - the $ is right up there at the moment.

It appears it was true and that Nikon have officially apologised

JB Hi-Fi in Oz are matching the price of 'genuine' Nikon's with parallel imported one's. Aren't JB in in NZ too:

I've decided to sell my Nikon D3S and move to the Nikon D800E. It's on order from the states. I shoot a few big events in low light and the D3S could handle ISO 8000 without loss of colour or detail and I sold many prints at this ISO. I believe I'll be able to deal with images up to ISO3200 and maybe ISO6400 at a pinch especially with the option to downsize to smaller prints. What I will be getting in return for the loss of ISO will be 1080 HD video which I'll be using for a few jobs coming up. Very exciting times as we move into a new phase in digital photography.
I don't think you will actually be losing much (if any) ISO performance with the D800. All tests to date indicate it will be within 1/3 to 1/5 of a stop of the D3S. Infact it even appears that it will have more dynamic range at higher ISOs than anything else.. Only remaining question is how well it maintains colour at those levels in comparison.

Thanks for the link, interesting graph. The proof will be in the pudding. The D3S was jaw dropping with colour detail at crazy iso settings... we will see. Will also be interesting to see where retailers pitch the price in NZ. Almost all gear I have has been imported from the states as NZ retailers find it very hard to compete with the strong NZD/USD.
If you are using or planning to use 24mm PC lens, be aware that is not compatible with D800.

Nothing an angle-grinder can't fix.
Doesn't seem to come with a manual either. Must be trying to imitate Apple.

P&V price is $4500.
So $650ish difference between this and the 5D3 vs $500 US difference.
