Canons DLO in DPP

Canons Digital Light optimisation is something new in 3.11.26 or so , just available for download.

You can download lens profiles for a bunch of well used lenses including my 17-55,100-400, 70-200f2.8IS and mkII , 10-22, 35L etc.

What it does is attempt to correct for known elements in the light path, the lens (ca, distortion etc but a lot more) and the sensor (aa filter etc).

So does it work?

Here is an image I took with the 7D and 17-55 whilst walking the kepler track in April 2010.

This isnt sharpening. I have switched sharpening off on DPP, and only the default sharpening on acr. Zoom in to 400% on the DPP effort and you will find no sharpening artefacts.

This is taken with a 100-400L at 400/5.6 ISO 160. Same, DPP/DLO on the right.



I've seen even more impressive things from corrections for the 35L etc.

I have seen similar results from the lens corrections module in DXO Optics - except that costs $$$

That's quite amazing, does it take long to process? I've never used DPP would it be a simple process to import to DPP then export into lightroom?

It takes a bit to process the image even on my 2500k (5-10 seconds - dont know if its multithreaded etc havnt looked), longer if you add on the other lens optimisations ( distortion & CA etc).

AFIK I think it can save the optimisation to the raw file (making it bigger) and also this prevents lightroom from reading it in!

I have been making my adjustments in DPP/DLO and then exporting a tiff to photoshop and not saving the data to the raw (I expect I dont need to go back again but can always redo this point).

I expect I could get the ACR shots looking closer to the DPP ones with sharpening and contrast BUT I can always apply those to the DPP shot too...

Hey thanks Rob, never bothered with that program before, but this update makes it a rather nice raw tool, has an hdr toolbox as well.

I always use DPP, i've never used LR or ACR. I process in DPP then TIFF export to PS3. This is a welcome addition to DPP, thanks tech guy

Is DPP a free download? my CD software is in the UK

I think Canon just has update downloads. You can probably easily find a copy somewhere else on the net though, and then update it via Canon.

Not sure if its piracy if the only people who will use DPP already own a canon DSLR(?).

You get the software free with an SLR but it isnt available, legit, to download (only updates).

If you cant find it I can dupe one of my disks.

It still baffles me why Canon don't have all their software downloadable as a CD - after all, if you need their software you have already purchased a Canon product no?

As it happens, all of the Canon software updates install the full product. They just check for existence of a previous install before installing.

A quick edit of registry to create something for the software to find and you're away.

It may or may not matter to you, but if you want to install the Canon tools (eg. for remote shooting) on to a netbook with a display smaller than 1024 x 768, you need to plug in an external monitor just for the installation. It runs OK on the netbook display afterwards. It just won't do the installation.

I can't find it, it is back home in the UK. I hav just bought LR, but finding it all a bit overwhelming at the moment, having never used it before. I will plod on and give LR4 a go and if get into trouble, i'll holler.

Typical, just as DPP got quite good!

I highly recommend getting the Scott Kelby books if you are a LR beginner, within a couple of hourse (once you have gone through all the setup tweaks ETC) you will be up and running. Can get from Amazon or Book Depository. I would loan you my LR3 book except its already with someone
