Its amazing how many people don't have much experience of this part of the South Island. The scenery is awesome on the right day - a lot closer to chch than tekapo is
I agree ^^ it can be absolutely stunning on a good day. Further up past this cluster of lakes is the Erewhon Station which opens out into one of the most amazing braided river views, this was one of the sights for the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. The south side of the Rangitata is pretty cool too, recently drove up to Mesopotamia Station with the local VW Club

More than likely you have, some ChCh VW's in there. Don't get me started on VW's, you'll regret it!! It is almost verging on being an illness, to prove my point me and a few mates are off to Los Angeles 1st June to a 'Split Bus' only show where there will be about 400 of them, this will be my sixth time!! You decide.
