In daylight, a couple of seconds is about right. think about it, if you get 8 stops out of the filter, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1s, 2s.
To get 30-60 seconds of exposure, even at f/22 or f/32 you'd need to be shooting near dawn/dusk.
Bought a vnd phottix filter after seeing some shots i would like to try any tips to using this filter
i read u could take up to 1min shutter
well im at about iso 100,f 22, 25sec in bulb most mostly used av also at f13 etc i couldnt get a slow shutter to blur the water only went down to 6sec
any body know to specs on this filter at max settings heard it was 8 stops??
heres a pic from today![]()

A VND filter is already basically two polarisers - my guess is adding a third is going to result in weird banding and colours. A neutral density filter would probably be ok if you want to darken some more.

You are correct a Variable ND filter is two polarizing filters where one is reverse to the other. I tested with to two CPL filters figuring I would get a similar effect screwing them together, but I actually had to turn one of them around (so it didn't match the threads on the first one) I suspect using a CPL with a VND will have no effect. It will match one of the two polarizers in the VND
